Seen in the Paul Mutter article in COASTRIDER

'' ................an event that the mayor had said helps cement the understanding that those residents from outside Spain are no longer ‘Chanes’ but fellow citizens of Los Montesinos''

Can I assume that CHANES is a perhaps derogotary name for 'non intergrating residents? - of which which there are a few !!

Many thanks I was hoping it was something like that - especially as spoken in public by the Alcalde

I assume this is Castillian - are there similar words in the Valenciana and Catalan 'languages'. I suppose Pais Vasco, Galicia and Cantabria have their own too?

Being Spanish but not from this area, I had never heard the worh "Chan" or "Chanes" until I came here.
At first I thought it was a derogatory term but was asured (by more than one Torrevejense), that in fact it was a local word meaning foreigner. In fact, a few weeks later I was handed a copy of the "Diccionario Torrevejense" which was produced some time ago, possible in a light hearted way, to explain to non torrevejenses the meanings of the "slang" words (like Chanes).

So all in all, the word is used to describe "you lot", lol

It appears the word Chane, Chanes is as old as Torrevieja itself and it was the term used when talking about the sailors who worked on the salt boats.

There is an on-line dictionary from San Miguel de Salinas which incorporates most of the words from the Torrevieja Dictionary.
The 'Diccionario Torrevejense', by Jose Luis Perez Maeso was first published in 1991 and is in its 3rd edition published in 2010
There are some snippets from it in this link

and a bit from the Diario Informacion http://www.laverdad.es/alicante/v/20101 ... 01207.html

and this is the San Miguel de Salinas one

also I did find this link to the Torrevieja dictionary on-line but only A & B would open http://www.galeon.com/galipoteweb/home/diccionario/
